FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. WHAT IS AAU? The Amateur Athletic Union is a National organization dedicated to amateur sports and physical fitness programs. Check out our links for more detailed information.
2. HOW LONG IS THE AAU SEASON (Practices/Tournament)?
Spring Season (Feb - June): 2 practices/week & 5-8 tournament weekends. Fall Season (Sept. - Nov.): 1-2 practices/week & 3-5 tournament weekends. Typically four games are played/weekend (2 on Sat./2 on Sun). Host of Tournament determine game times. State and Regional Tournaments may require play begin on a Friday evening. Practice sites are determined by the geographic make-up of a particular team and gym availability.
3. HOW ARE THE AGE GROUPS, TEAMS & PLAYING TIMES DETERMINED? See age calculators above. At the younger ages (10u/5th-11u/6th), we commit to our players and believe in a no-cut /quality play policy once you are on the team this affords the players every opportunity to grow and develop as a basketball player. From 12u-16u, we work to prepare the players for the real world: open-tryouts and competitive based play.
4. HOW DOES MY CHILD BECOME A WILDCAT? Register and come to the tryouts. The WILDCATS have tryouts in January &/or February. There is a $30 non-refundable fee associated with tryouts. No player is guaranteed a spot on any team.
5. WHERE ARE THE WILDCATS FROM? We have players that come from Ashland, Acton, Billerica, Brighton, Hopkinton, Lexington, Needham, Newton, Sudbury, Watertown, Wayland, Westford, Woburn, and many other towns around the Metro West.
6. WHAT TYPE OF COMMITMENT IS INVOLVED WITH THE WILDCATS?
Each player is expected to make every attempt to attend games and practices. However, there are always conflicts and communication with the coaches is crucial. Advanced warning allows for any necessary adjustments in practice or game routines.
7. WHAT ARE THE GOALS OF THE WILDCATS? The WILDCATS support the true spirit of AAU athletics. We stress fundamentals and fairplay at a competitive level. As many new programs sprout up and others merge together continually retooling their teams each season (out with the old and in with the new philosophy), the WILDCATS proudly strive to retain our players, establishing a sense of pride in our program.
8. WHO ARE THE WILDCAT COACHES? THERE ARE NO PARENT COACHES IN THE WILDCAT ORGANIZATION. Our coaches are former collegiate and high school players or coaches. They love the game of basketball and take pride in their desire and tireless dedication to teach it.
9. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO BE A WILDCAT? We try to keep fees to a minimum. Factors that may influence cost: number of players on the team, number of tournaments, practice facilities, uniforms, coaches stipends, insurance and AAU fees. Spring Season fees are generally between $400-$650. Fall Season runs about $300-$450. There is a $30 non-refundable tryout fee and players must register with the AAU: $14. If your team travels to non-local tournaments or qualifies for Nationals, then there will be additional costs including travel, room and board, etc.
