2/19/08– Rookie Cartwright Honored by GNAC
Erin Cartwright '11 STANDISH, ME - Freshman guard Erin Cartwright (Acton, MA) has been named the GNAC Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week for her play in two contests last week. Cartwright averaged 7.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.0 blocked shots per game during the 1-1 week for St. Joe's.
The Acton-Boxborough High School graduate has started 22 games for St. Joe's this season and ranks third on the team in assists (2.1 apg), fourth in steals (1.0 spg) and sixth in scoring (6.2 ppg).
Cartwright was named to the Maine Women's Basketball Coaches Association Weekly Honor Roll on January 14th after posting a season-best 14 points in a win over Newbury College during the reporting week. The freshman has reached double-digit point totals in five games this season.
The Saint Joseph's College Women's Basketball team is currently 15-8 overall and 10-4 in GNAC play and will host conference opponent Rivier College on Saturday, February 23rd in the team's final regular season contest.

BOSTON (AP) -- Carolyn Swords was going to high school nearby when Maryland brought a bunch of underclassmen to the new Boston Garden and won the 2006 NCAA championship.

Now she's a Boston College freshman, and those title-winning Terrapins are seniors and juniors who have the school back near the top of women's college basketball.
"I was very excited to play a nationally ranked team," Swords said, still grinning even though her 28 points and 13 rebounds couldn't stop No. 4 Maryland from beating BC 88-61 on Thursday night. "It was very exciting to play those players from that team that won."
Crystal Langhorne had 18 points and 18 rebounds to break the Maryland career rebounding record set by Len Elmore and help the Terrapins (19-1, 3-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) win their ninth straight game. Kristi Toliver, who as a freshman sank a 3-pointer to force overtime in the championship game, had a season-high 26 points to go with seven assists.
Swords has known that since attending the '06 national semifinals and then watching Maryland beat Duke in the title game on TV. But the 6-foot-6 freshman from suburban Sudbury was neither nervous nor overmatched, going 12-for-16 from the floor -- the only BC player in double figures and the only one to make more than half of her shots.
"She was so excited about this game. To me, that's a very good sign, to have a freshman who's not intimidated by the No. 4 team in the country," Inglese said. "She said, 'I can't wait.' She was very excited to see players she'd seen on TV. She wanted to go against them."
The same was true for throughout the BC lineup. "They knew Maryland was a veteran team. They have a lot of experience. They weren't intimidated by it," Inglese said. "If you're going to lose, learn from it."
Maryland led from the first free throw, opening a 13-3 lead with 14:10 left in the first half and going up by 15, 29-14, before BC staged any sort of rally. Swords had a pair of second-chance baskets as the Eagles scored eight straight points

Igoe boosts Bates2/21/10
Former Lexington High star Jessie Igoe, a junior tri-captain and center on the Bates College women’s basketball team, was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference Player of the Week, and shared Maine Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Week honors after scoring a career-high 22 points and adding 11 rebounds in team’s final regular season game, a 71-57 upset of 14th-ranked Tufts.
It was the Bobcats’ first victory over a nationally ranked team in four years.
“Jessie is playing with confidence and skill. Her post moves have been almost unstoppable and her ability to get to the free throw line and convert her foul shots has really helped our team,’’ said head coach Jim Murphy, whose sixth-seeded squad played at No. 2 Williams yesterday in the NESCAC quarterfinals.

March 9, 2009Greensboro, NC - Boston College sophomore Carolyn Swords was named to the 2009 ACC All-Tournament second team today as announced by the conference this afternoon.
Boston College finished the tournament 1-1 after defeating Miami in the first game, 76-59, on March 5. Swords had 20 points on 10-for-12 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds. In the quarterfinal game against Florida State, Swords fouled out with 10 minutes to play and finished with 17 points, 7-for-8 from the field, five rebounds and two blocks. In the two games, she averaged 18.5 points a game, six rebounds, two blocks and shot 81.5 percent from the floor.
Swords, a native of Sudbury, Mass., who was named to the All-ACC second team last week, also earned a spot on the 2009All-ACC Academic team for the second time in her career.
The Eagles 6-foot-6 center is averaging 15.3 points while shooting 68.5 percent from the floor. She leads the Boston College in rebounds with an 8.9 average. Swords joined the 500-Point-500-Rebound Club in the final regular season game.

Chestnut Hill, MA - Boston College women's basketball team placed one player on the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District women's basketball team. Eagles center Carolyn Swords was named to the District 1 second-team as announced by CoSIDA. Swords' is the first player since the 2006-07 season when Kathrin Ress earned the award.
Swords, a native of Sudbury, Ma., is the Eagles second leading scorer with a 15.1 point per game average. She leads the ACC and the country in field goal percentage (68 percent). She has started every game since her arrival on campus last season.
Swords', who is a communications major in the College of Arts & Sciences, received the Athletics Director's Award for Academic Achievement as well as the Outstanding Scholar-Athlete for the freshman class last season.

Chestnut Hill, MA - Boston College's Carolyn Swords was named Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week as announced by the conference today. Swords led the Eagles (7-2) to two victories over New Hampshire and Florida International last week.
The Eagles center is the second Boston College player to earn the weekly conference honor as Mickel Picco won player of the week on Dec. 1.
A sophomore, Swords shot an impressive 81 percent from the field (17-for-21), scored 38 points, and grabbed 25 rebounds over the two games. Swords', a native of Sudbury, MA, is shooting 70 percent from the field for the season, which is No. 1 in the conference. Against New Hampshire, Swords shot 6-for-8 (13 points) and had eight rebounds in the first half alone. She finished the game with 19 points and 14 rebounds.
Against FIU, Swords had 14 points and eight rebounds in just 14 minutes of play in the first half. In merely 12 minutes of action in the second half, Swords grabbed five boards and went 2-for-2 from the field. She finished the game with 19 points and 11 rebounds in just 25 minutes of play.
The two double-doubles gives her four this season and nine for her career. She has also led Boston College in scoring in four games and has reached double figures in all nine games. Swords is currently averaging 17.1 points, and 9.6 rebounds a game.
4/15/2008 - Boston College freshman center Carolyn Swords finished the season third in the nation in field goal percentage. Swords, who earned ACC Rookie of the Week honors four times this past season, shot 64.2 percent from the floor. BC rookie center earns fourth ACC ROW honor
Feb. 25, 2008 CHESTNUT HILL, MA - Boston College freshman center Carolyn Swords was named the ACC Rookie of the Week as announced by the conference office today.
This is the fourth time this season Swords has garnered the Rookie of the Week honor in the conference. Boston College, as a team, has won the award nine out of 13 weeks this season. Swords teammate, Stefanie Murphy, has earned the award five times this season.
The 6-foot-6 center from Sudbury, Mass., shot a sizzling 84.6 percent from the field and averaged 13.5 points and 5.6 rebounds in the two games. In the win over Georgia Tech, Swords went 6-for-6 from the field and sealed the victory when she grabbed an offensive rebound and put it in to give the Eagles a five point lead with just under two minutes to play. Against Florida State, Swords went 5-for-7 from the field and 3-for-4 from the foul line, while grabbing seven rebounds before fouling out.
Swords currently leads the conference in field goal percentage (64.5), is 17th in scoring and ninth in rebounding. She is the third leading scorer and second leading rebounder among all the freshmen in the ACC.

Lincoln-Sudbury, between 32 points for Sarah Wetmore and 20 for Carolyn Swords (despite foul trouble), captured the D2N title 68-53.
LS came out strongly with Swords dominating on both ends. Her footwork, passing, and defensive anticipation are all vastly improved since last season. LS went up 18-10 before Swords departed for the bench with a pair of phantom fouls.
Melrose closed to within one with Swords out, but the LS Coach rolled the dice and put Swords back in with about 3:40 left and LS rallied to go up 29-20 by halftime. The game was played at a halfcourt pace, definitely favoring LS.
The action picked up a bit in the second half, with Melrose closing to about 40-34 on a brief spurt by Lynley DeAmato, but LS continued to dominate both ends on the boards, and Melrose had trouble generating any sustained offense.
As mentioned, LS was up about 12 with 6 minutes left, and Melrose never got within single digits.
Kirwan fouled out with about four minutes to go and DeAmato with about 1:30. Swords fouled out with about 4 minutes to go, and put up her big numbers probably in about 18-20 minutes.
Melrose never had any answer for the LS frontline (Kearse also solid), and LS's rebounding and interior passing excelled.
Wetmore lived at the free throw line the last few minutes giving her an outstanding offensive output.

Hawk girls tough out victory over Medford By Scott Souza/Daily News staff Wednesday, January 24, 2007 Waltham juniors Renee LeBlanc and Kayla Torres combined for 49 points last night at Connors Gym.
On a night when a physical Medford team kept the Hawks off the mark most of the game, Waltham used a spirited defensive effort and the would-not-be-denied offensive perseverance of LeBlanc (30 points) and Torres (19) to fend off the persistent Mustangs. Waltham improved to 6-5 (4-5 Greater Boston League) with a victory that could prove critical to its state tournament hopes.
Close call for girls basketball
With 40 seconds to go in the extra period, Lexington clung to a one-point lead, 39-38. In overtime, senior Jessie Igoe hit two key baskets for Lexington. Lexington walked out of Belmont with a hard-fought 41-38 win. The Minutemen (9-2) were led by Igoe, who poured in a game-high 15 points. She also hauled down seven rebounds.
Geraghty Named Athlete of the Year
As a student, a player, and an athlete, Anne Geraghty will leave a legacy behind at Westford Academy
To say that senior captain Anne Geraghty of the Westford girls lacrosse team is a sniper may be the understatement of the year.
In a recent five-game stretch, Geraghty tallied 23 goals. Some would be happy with that for a career.
Not for Geraghty, who hopes to lead the Westford girls lacrosse team to its second straight tournament appearance this season.
It is her speed, quickness, determination and mostly her athleticism that have made her the player she is today.
“She’s the most athletic kid that has come through our program,” said WA head coach Shaun Hart. “She is so far beyond kids with her speed and agility.”
Geraghty stepped on the lacrosse field as a freshman, with her only prior playing experience being a short time in sixth grade. It was at that point that Hart knew he had a special player on his hands.
“When we see freshmen come in that are athletes, we play them right away,” said Hart. “As a freshman, we saw that athleticism in Annie.”
Her freshman season was cut a bit short as she missed several games to take a trip to Italy. However, the ground was set for what would be a great career, as she finished her freshman season with 11 goals and three assists.
A gradual improvement began in her sophomore year (28 goals, four assists), before having a season of epic proportions last year as a junior. She was quick to deflect the development of her game elsewhere.
“I would say that Mr. Hart has really influenced my game the most,” said Geraghty. “Both him and my Dad (who played in high school) have really helped my game along.”
Her junior year was astounding as she scored 86 goals and recorded 15 assists. Consider that the Ghosts played 22 games last year and that is an average of 3.90 goals per game.
Prior to the season, Geraghty was named captain along with teammate Taylor MacKay. It’s a role that Geraghty takes to heart.
“It’s my job to bring the team together and make sure my teammates are pumped up for the games,” said Geraghty.
Her leadership has been evident in several contests this year. A tough loss to Concord-Carlisle, a battle against Chelmsford where she was knocked out of the game for a short time, and a recent game against Wayland where her five goal, second half outburst helped WA beat Wayland for the first time ever.
In the C-C game, the Ghosts trailed by one with less than a minute to play. Geraghty got open at midfield and screamed for the ball. She dashed toward the C-C net and was tripped as she approached.
Determined, she bounced to her feet, chased the loose ball down and fired the potential game-tying shot. It would hit the cross bar and come out.
“All captains have one game where they show why they are a captain,” said Hart. “That’s the day she became a captain.”
Her senior year has been stellar as well as she has scored 52 goals while assisting on 15 others. She is 19 points shy of becoming the all-time leader in Westford girls lacrosse scoring. She already holds the record for most goals.
Anne’s skills reach far beyond the lacrosse field, as she is a four-year member of the girls soccer team, a member of student council, a member of International Club and yearbook editor.
“Anne is one of those kids that always smiles and gives it her all,” said yearbook advisor Gina Mustoe. “She is a leader on and off the field that parents and faculty respect. I could not have completed the yearbook without her expertise, time, and dedication.”
Geraghty will be taking her skills and talents to Waterville, Maine next year to attend Colby College, where she fully intends on continuing her lacrosse career.
“The biggest thing for her next year will be playing against kids of equal talent, but she will be fine,” said Hart. “She’s a great kid who is the total package
